
ETSU students participate in national singing competition
04.24.2006JOHNSON CITY, TN — Five students from East Tennessee State University competed recently in the regional auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing held at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City. Over 300 singers from Tennessee and Kentucky performed before panels of judges the first day of competition in order to reach the semi-final round on the second day.
All five ETSU students were among those selected to advance to the semi-finals. They were Jeremy Smith, a freshman voice major from Bluff City; Leslie Anderson Scollin, a junior voice major from Kingsport; Linda Brimer, a junior voice major from Greeneville; John Williams, a senior voice major from Elizabethton; and Travis Thompson, a senior education major from Piney Flats. All are students of Dr. Thomas Jenrette, ETSU professor of music, and they were accompanied by Jennifer Palmer, a junior piano major from Johnson City. During the semi-finals, Brimer and Thompson were selected as finalists in their divisions, and in the finals, held the second day at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, both placed second overall in the competition and received cash awards.
